The UK government has placed eleven further nations to its travel advisory list concerning the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated beverages.

The revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a global increase in the incidence of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, authorities had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after multiple high-profile cases including the tragic death of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even minimal doses of methanol can lead to vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Methanol is a poisonous substance often used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not intended for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.

Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer emphasized that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," the official said.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a hangover that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – get medical help fast."
