The Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Top Place.

On the surface, this album may look closer to a difficult university quiz than a new pop record by an artist who just had a last single featured a global pop star. Broken across four separate parts and sung in thirteen tongues, it is a breathtaking symphonic work that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical change, often through the perspective of various female saints. The end of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, supported by the lush sound of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer audacity by itself makes the work of contemporary artists look quite modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album succeeds in transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, and full credit going to the artist. While this is not her first project to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, its ambitions feel much greater on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. What truly raises this fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, is an essential spirit of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she is breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That exuberant energy shines brightly during a stirring piano-led ballad about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a comically over-the-top orchestral surge thuds down like comedic force. The track immediately segues into the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in you never quite understand—or even want to know—what you will go to next."

Nearly every song finishes in a completely different place from where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a delicate orchestration only to collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, until sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of the album is navigating the gap between bold experimentation and broad appeal. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track sung primarily in English builds on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spirals skyward. That trick is repeated by a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album represents pop on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its own built-in excess. It is an abundant source of buried gems that takes time to fully mine but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests at it, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly creative visionary.
