The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which works to save the United Kingdom's small music venues.

The star was awarded the prize on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was named the best record of the previous year.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages had in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the area, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – about 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to support numerous small stages across the UK.

The money helped spaces that were confronting imminent closure due to issues stemming from water damage, fires and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in modernizing facilities and gear that positively impacted artists and audiences.

"The idea that funds from performances in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

The musician is among several artists to give his honor winnings to good deeds.

Back when Pulp won the prize in 1996 for their release the album, lead singer the singer declared that the group would donate their winnings to the organization the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist divided her award between multiple charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed updated gear," the artist shared with the media.

In recent years, they donated their winnings to the community center that supported their band, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners the group contributed their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," stated artist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success touched another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had protected two grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under community ownership.

The Joiners in the city and the other in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by the arts council and supporters who acquire "shares" in the properties.
