Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's ODI Team to Face Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-game ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected call-up.

Recent Form Lead to Omission

The right-hander was left out from the ODI team after being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a best innings of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia look for a solution to their top-order woes.

Bowling Additions and Injury Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Team Announcement Approach and Schedule

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
