New research reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using such treatments need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
