From Single-Parent Vacation Nightmare to House-Sitting Bliss: One Mother's Transformation

Following my marriage ended, I naively thought holidays as a solo mother would be straightforward. Quickly realized they proved often outrageously costly, otherwise seemed only suitable for “conventional” households, or else were so cheap that I returned back more knackered than when I’d left.

Early Vacation Attempts

The initial endeavor, camping with friends, was fine up until the moment came to dismantle our shelter. Four hours of struggling with it under the sun afterward, I developed a dislike for the outdoors. Next, the adventure trip for solo-parent families. The abseiling and exploring caves were brilliant, but resting in a bunk bed wrecked my back. We tried a low-cost package on the island, but the crowds of nuclear families felt intense, and pool-side conversations with other women fizzled out because I didn’t come with a handy partner for their spouses to chat with. A trip to Mallorca alongside a pal and her kids was wonderful, but the cost was staggering.

Discovering Pet-Sitting

Then, the previous fall, a friend inquired if we’d house-sit her pets within the county while she attended to a ceremony. During a peaceful weekend, we walked on the beach, and settled near the fireplace at night. This prompted to house-sitting for her friend in Dorset, which also went smoothly. Encouraged, I subscribed with an yearly £99 membership to join a pet-sitting platform, where, in exchange for looking after people’s pets, you stay at their residences without cost. In just a couple of days, I secured a ten-day house-sit within the county, looking after a labrador named Buzz while the proprietors traveled overseas.

Our daily walks provided the opportunity to discover breathtaking natural settings.

It was our first sit for strangers, but all anxiety vanished as soon as we arrived at the gorgeous four-bedroom house and encountered the calm Buzz, who thrived for belly scratches. Each day's dog walks offered us the possibility to explore stunning nature spots, and, once we came home, we could relax in the garden for meaningful discussions about our favourite “Ghosts” personas in the television series. There were no pricey tourist traps to wander around – rather, we perused bookshops, indulged to manicures, and embarked on paddling excursions. I experienced more carefree and happier than I had for a long time, and could feel my bond alongside my child Polly strengthen every day. I’m not hesitant to admit that I cried from joy. Life seemed achievable once more.

Could House-Sitting for You?

Pet-sitting isn’t for everyone. Certain individuals want no responsibilities during vacations apart from selecting their upcoming cocktail, aren’t fond of dogs or cats, or feel odd regarding sleeping in a someone else’s bed, clearing their dishwasher, and putting out their bins. However the gentle rhythm of ordinary living, with work stripped out and fresh locations to explore, suits me perfectly.

It keeps me from slipping into total inactivity, which makes me feeling restless and strangely empty. Moreover, monetarily, pet-sitting is a lifeline for a single parent. Ten days break in a similar-sized property in the same region we visited could cost me about £2,500 on Airbnb.

An Alternative Outlook

Regarding residing in a stranger’s home, I found it enriching. Even though pet-sitting represents a exchange, it’s also an act of trust between strangers and animals, that has brought out my best self – my patient, loving and balanced aspect, overflowing with appreciation for the people and places we discover. I have lined up another short break off, caring for a sighthound in leafy Surrey, and, in the coming year, I’d like to attempt pet-sitting overseas. Thanks to a bit of creative planning, we can experience the world from the comfort of a home – it simply turns out to be another person’s.
