Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
