RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
