According to a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American military executed a lethal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.

“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance verified the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”

Context and Recent Actions

This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military presence.

Only on the previous day, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny

The administration has faced increasing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.

While the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to suggest a wider political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”

This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
